Affective Domain of Learning and Perceived Acquisition of Soft Skills Among Tourism and Hospitality Diploma Students in Nairobi County: The Moderating Influence of Course Enrolled

Abstract: The tourism and Hospitality landscape globally is rapidly changing to accommodate evolving dynamics of customer expectations that dictate consumption and business success in the serviced driven experiential industry. This has necessitated the need for industry professionals who possess industry specific soft skills to spur growth while maintaining competitiveness. Despite the growing interest in the integration of Affective Domain of Learning (ADL) framework into training, the interplay of this framework and perceived acquisition of soft skills among tourism and hospitality diploma students is under-investigated. This study recognizes the interdisciplinary nature of the hospitality sector characterized by different clusters of courses, each requiring different affective learning activities. Therefore, this research leveraged the humanism learning theory to explore the moderating influence of course enrolled on the relationship between the ADL framework and perceived acquisition of soft skills among students enrolled in different courses in the tourism and hospitality diploma training programme. The study employed a quantitative research design that targeted 822 second and third year students pursuing diploma in tourism and hospitality spread across five institutions in Nairobi County of Kenya. The study employed the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach on data drawn from a sample of 240 students to show that despite the ADL framework having an independent positive and significant effect on students perceived acquisition of soft skills, the course enrolled negatively moderated this effect, an indication that the course enrolled determines the pressure to be exerted on the ADL framework. Educators and industry stakeholders should therefore take cognizance of the importance of the course enrolled when designing learning activities to include in the ADL framework. However, for enhanced external validity, future studies should seek to expand the geographic scope to include more counties, countries, or undergraduate tourism and hospitality students; as well as considering experimental designs to minimize social desirability biases.

Contribution of CBT to the Livelihoods of the Adjacent Households in Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area, Uganda

Abstract: Community-based tourism plays a very vital role in the livelihoods of households adjacent to protected areas. The study examined the link between household economic activities and tourism and the contribution of QECA resources to the livelihoods of the adjacent households in western Uganda. The study is underpinned by the theory of participation. An exploratory research design with a blend of qualitative and quantitative approaches were adopted and data collected using a structured questionnaire and key informant interview question guide. Six hundred respondents from community-based tourism (CBT) groups were interviewed and the data were analyzed in SPSS. Results revealed that tourism created employment and business opportunities for group members. Average monthly incomes from tourism related activities ranged from UGX 150,000 (USD USD 40.2) to UGX 2.5 million (USD 681). Value of household assets ranged from UGX 30,000 (USD 8.17) to UGX 9.6 million (USD 2.615). CBT members provided services such as tour guiding, accommodation, motor cycle transport, sale of food, hand crafts and souvenirs. Local communities need to be empowered through capacity building to engage in sustainable CBT activities. Future research should be undertaken on cost-benefit analysis of CBT before upscaling the practice to other parts of the country.

Abstract: This study examines the mobility challenges tourists face in Ziro Valley, Arunachal Pradesh, India. The research was conducted in September 2022 during the Ziro Festival of Music and surveyed a diverse group of international, national, and domestic tourists. The primary goal was to identify the most significant factors that impede tourist mobility to and within their destinations. The study employed a field survey methodology, gathering data from a cross-section of tourists to understand their experiences. To analyse the collected data, researchers used Garrett's ranking technique, a statistical method for ranking items based on their perceived importance. This technique was specifically applied to determine the key challenges affecting overall tourist mobility and to investigate the specific inconveniences faced by international tourists in Arunachal Pradesh and all tourists during their stay in Ziro Valley. The findings of this research indicate that the condition of road communications is the most significant factor hindering tourist mobility. This poor road infrastructure poses a considerable barrier, making it difficult for tourists to reach their desired destinations and navigate the region effectively. The study’s results highlight the urgent need for improvements in the transportation network to enhance the tourist experience and promote tourism in the Ziro Valley. In conclusion, this paper successfully identifies and ranks the key mobility challenges encountered by tourists in the Ziro Valley. By using Garrett's ranking technique, the study provides a clear and data-driven understanding of the most pressing issues. The findings strongly suggest that improving road infrastructure is essential to overcoming these obstacles and facilitating smoother travel for visitors. This research serves as a valuable resource for policymakers and tourism developers aiming to enhance the region's accessibility and appeal.

Abstract: This article evaluates the positive experiences communicated by customers regarding the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel. The objective is to identify the principal themes expressed in online reviews and to discern key concepts that contribute to guest satisfaction. The study examines 4,714 online reviews of the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel collected from January 2019 to August 2024, primarily sourced from platforms such as Google, TripAdvisor, Booking.com, Agoda, Ctrip, and hotel.com. Analysis of these 4,714 reviews revealed a total of 9,581 distinct positive mentions. These mentions were categorized into 27 themes, each accompanied by the frequency of associated compliments. The findings highlight six key factors that significantly enhance guest satisfaction: patrons frequently commend the hotel's diverse and exceptional culinary offerings, noting that the outstanding standards and inviting ambiance to create a lasting impression. The provision of clean, spacious rooms with stunning views ensures a high level of comfort, while the strategic location of the hotel, near both the airport and city center, adds to the overall convenience. Furthermore, the commitment of the staff to delivering exemplary experiences is often noted, with a particular emphasis on the warmth and professionalism exhibited by the team, which contributes to guests feeling valued. These findings advocate for a renewed focus on these elements to not only enrich the guest experience but also to fortify the hotel’s competitive standing. In addition, the results offer a framework to acknowledge staff through positive feedback, thereby fostering a culture of continuous improvement in service quality.

Abstract: The relevance of service delivery on customer patronage of campus local restaurants cannot be overemphasized. The study assessed the effects of service delivery on campus local restaurants in Ekiti State, Nigeria. The research objectives specifically assessed the effects of service delivery on customer patronage of campus local restaurants in Ekiti State, Nigeria; examined the impact of food quality on customers patronage of campus local restaurants; evaluated the role of service delivery in influencing customers satisfaction and loyalty to campus local restaurants; assessed the effect of restaurant ambiance and environment on customer experiences, and evaluated the importance of pricing and perceived value for money on customer decisions. A descriptive research design of survey type was employed for the study. The population of the study comprised students enrolled in selected institutions in Ekiti State, Nigeria. A sample size of 888 respondents were selected for the study using multi-stage sampling procedure. A self-structured questionnaire was developed to collect data for the study. Descriptive frequency counts, percentage, and multiple regression analysis were used to analyse the data. The study revealed that food quality, responsive customer service, appealing ambiance and perceived value for money significantly impact customer satisfaction and repeat patronage of campus local restaurants in Ekiti State, Nigeria. The findings of the study revealed that the quality of food served at the campus local restaurants is an important determinant for patronage. The study concluded that maintaining high food quality, exceptional customer service, a clean and inviting restaurant environment and competitive pricing strategies in campus restaurants promotes customer patronage. The study recommends that there should be adequate investment in staff training, digital innovations, and maintaining high hygiene and food quality to sustain customer patronage.
